The magic of Machu Picchu

I did not actually want to go to Peru. It was Bueno, my trusty friend and travel companion who had the idea. Idea is the wrong word, though. Vision or brainwave would be more appropriate. I was sound asleep when it happened, at about four in the morning in the middle of the week. The phone rang. It was Bueno. “Machu Picchu … next week.”

“Oh no”, I said yawning. “Machu Picchu is a postcard cliché that the world has seen at least 5,000 times. There is no mystery left in Peru, only lamas, alpaca sweaters, corrupt politicians, highwaymen playing the flute and massive women eating guinea-pigs.”
