Myanmar, Burma

“I had always wanted to go to Burma, ever since I’d read the stories by Somerset Maugham and George Orwell. They seemed to be brimming over with accounts of golden pagodas and holy Bao trees. However, each time I told one of my friends of my plans, he reacted as if I’d suddenly proposed the re-introduction of the guillotine to behead shoplifters in Germany: “I see, that’s very interesting. You want to travel to a country whose inhabitants have been enslaved and suppressed by their government for years. You want to support the student murderer, General Than Shwe, who has repeatedly placed the opposition leader and Nobel Peace Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, under house arrest – even though Europe, the USA and Amnesty International have never been so united about imposing economic sanctions. Maybe you’d also like to apply to train the children’s army, who have to fight the Shan Rebels in the north east?”
