Mumbai, India
Meet the King of Bollywood

In years gone by, Mumbai consisted of just a few fishing villages inhabited by the Koli fishing folk. The Koli devoted the sacred Mumba Devi Temple to the goddess Mumba Devi, who gave her name to the peninsula: Mumbai. A sultan then presented the peninsula to the Portuguese as a gift. In 1661, it became English as part of the dowry through King Charles II’s marriage to a Portuguese princess. Mumbai became the first piece in the mosaic of the future British colony – and over the years its name was corrupted into “Bonne Bay”, later to become Bombay.

Text by Stefan Elfenbein for a Bombay city portrait published in the Lufthansa Exclusive Magazin
