The freedom we believe in
First impressions of Kaliningrad: wide concrete aisles and rows of functional housing projects still emblazoned with old propaganda slogans: “Slawa Sowjtskomu Narodu”, glory to the Soviet people; the streets lined by monuments celebrating cosmonauts, soldiers and the proletariat. In front of park benches, old women sell berries and mushrooms out of plastic buckets, their hands raw and their faces pale. In the shopping malls western brands entice passers-by: Gucci, Panasonic, BMW. Young, long-legged peroxide blondes stroll along in short skirts and high heels. Sturdy young men in embroidered leather jackets fiddle with their mobile phones. At night: neon ads, multicoloured lights, discos and live music.
